Lobgesang

June 26 – 29, 2025 | Philharmonie Berlin

The Grand Finale …
The ultimate highlight of the concert season 2024/25 on the last day of the CHORALSPACE Summer Festival 2025: A joint performance of 1.000 participants with Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang conducted by Simon Halsey at the Philharmonie Berlin.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy
Lobgesang

“The night has passed but the day has come”
This metaphor for the illumination that Gutenberg’s invention and the printing of Gutenbergs Bible brought to European culture in the 15th century, seems the key image of Mendelssohn’s work. Lobgesang was premiered on June 25, 1840 in the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig and met with an enthusiastic response from the public. Robert Schumann that wrote the review of that premiere at the Neue Zeitschrift für Music, estimates that more than 500 performers participated at the concert that would became a turning-point for Mendelssohn’s career.
Our Berlin projects starts exactly 185 years after that premiering performance in Leipzig.
