The Sound of Water

September 9 – 12, 2027 | Philharmonie Berlin

Christopher Tin: The Drop That Contained the Sea
International Choral Festival
in collaboration with the Knabenkantorei Basel & Vokalhelden Berlin

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Knabenkantorei Basel, choirs and individual singers from around the world are invited to take part in a unique international choral festival in the Great Hall of the Berliner Philharmonie.

At the heart of the festival is the song cycle The Drop That Contained the Sea by the multi-award-winning composer Christopher Tin. This extraordinary work explores water as a universal element—both life-giving and destructive, shaping cultures, landscapes, and human experience.

Each movement reflects a different form and journey of water: from melting snow to mountain streams, rivers, and the vast ocean. Sung in multiple languages and inspired by diverse vocal traditions, the cycle creates a powerful global musical narrative.

“In the same way that every drop of water contains the essence of the sea,
inside every human is the essence of all of humanity”
– Christopher Tin

The project is led by artistic director Oliver Rudin and offers participating singers the opportunity to perform with a professional orchestra in one of the world’s most renowned concert venues.

Choirs & Ensembles

Knabenkantorei Basel

The Knabenkantorei Basel is one of Switzerland’s leading boys’ choirs, combining a rich musical tradition with artistic excellence at an international level. Founded in 1927, the choir has played a significant role in the cultural life of Basel and beyond for nearly a century.

Its repertoire spans from early music and major oratorio works to contemporary compositions and innovative concert formats. Regular performances in prestigious venues and international tours highlight the ensemble’s high artistic standards.

Under the direction of Oliver Rudin, the Knabenkantorei Basel continuously develops new artistic projects while providing comprehensive musical training for young singers.

Vokalhelden Berlin

The Vokalhelden were founded in 2013 by the Berlin Philharmonic on the initiative of Simon Halsey and Sir Simon Rattle. The artistic director of the Vokalhelden is Johannes David Wolff. The aim of the program is to inspire as many children and young people as possible to sing together, regardless of their origin, native language, disabilities or financial means. Over 350 children aged 6 to 13 rehearse every week at locations in the districts of Moabit, Hellersdorf, Schöneberg, Gropiusstadt, in the Märkisches Viertel and in the cross-district youth choir. Performances in the districts and cross-location concerts take place regularly.
