Walking in Beauty

A Celebration of Contemporary Choral Music
April 12 – 16, 2023 | Philharmonie Berlin, Germany

In April next year, CHORALSPACE presents Walking in Beauty – a festival focusing on contemporary choral music. In partnership with Musica Baltica and Edition Peters, we are thrilled to be inviting one of the most popular composers in the world today to be our Composer-in-Residence.
Welcome, Ēriks Ešenvalds!

Walking in Beauty is an opportunity for both individual singers and choirs from all over the world to gather, performing not only repertoire by Ešenvalds but also showcasing glorious contemporary music from their own nations.

Workshops, Performances, Discussions, Presentations, Sing Along …
in Berlin’s Top Venues

During this 5-day event, singers will enjoy a programme of workshops, seminars and performances in a selection of the most exciting venues that Berlin has to offer. The climax of the festival is The Grand Finale at the Berlin Philharmonie. Sit back and enjoy both ensemble showcases and the joint forces of individual singers and ensembles, performing as one – The CHORALSPACE Festival Chorus.

Ēriks Ešenvalds is one of the most sought-after composers working today, with a busy commission schedule and performances of his music heard on every continent. In 2011 he was awarded the two-year position of Fellow Commoner in Creative Arts at Trinity College, University of Cambridge. Since then, Ēriks has won multiple awards for his work and undertakes many international residencies working on his music and lecturing.

Guest composers from Southeast Asia
In collaboration with Muziksea

CHORALSPACE is also delighted to be using this festival as a platform for a special focus of contemporary choral music from Southeast Asia. In collaboration with Muziksea, we are proud to champion the diverse cultural heritage of this thriving choral landscape. Walking in Beauty will shine a light on 5 Southeast Asian composers and arrangers – Ken Steven from Indonesia, Jude B. Roldan and Ily Matthew Maniano based in The Philippines, and Zechariah Goh and Darius Lim from Singapore.

Ēriks Ešenvalds comments:

“I am looking forward to coming together in Berlin in April 2023 with CHORALSPACE. The opportunity to gather in one place to share our different countries cultures as well as our common love of choral singing and choral music is exciting. I can’t wait to share my music with you!”
